The Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City

Absecon Lighthouse History and Facts

Congress had a hard time to appropriate funds for the Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City. Construction for the lighthouse began around 1855 and completed in 1857. It powers 171 feet and a focal plane of 167 feet. It has a stone foundation with a timber wood platform. It is constructed of massive brick cavity walls. Inside it has an iron spiral staircase that leads to the top of the tower. There are 228 steps and 12 more to the lantern room for a total of 240 steps.
